Boiler Feed Pump Questions, Answered
Regenerative turbine or multistage centrifugal?
Neither is universally better. Regenerative turbine pumps are well suited to low-flow, high-pressure, on/off feed service, particularly on firetube and smaller watertube boilers. Multistage centrifugals are generally better suited to higher-flow, continuous-feed applications with modulating control and can pair well with VFDs.
The selection comes down to flow, discharge pressure, feedwater temperature, suction conditions, operating cycle, and control strategy.
Why do suction conditions matter so much?
Feedwater is often near its boiling point, so available NPSH at the pump inlet can be limited. If the pump doesn't have enough available NPSH, the water can begin to flash at the inlet, causing cavitation, noise, vibration, and damage to impellers and seals. In deaerator service, vessel pressure, water temperature, elevation, and suction-line losses all affect the available margin. That's why we want to understand the suction setup before recommending a pump.
